Musa basjoo

Evergreen (in zones 10-11) or deciduous (zones 5-9) ornamental banana growing to around 15' tall and forming large massive clumps over time. Plant dies to the ground in zones 5-7 but grows back from the roots in spring. Long, slender, green tropical leaves are great for tropical effect and around pools and patios. Showy yellow flowers in summer add to ornamental appeal. Plant in full sun to half sun. Give good drainage and average water. Feed with all purpose fertilizer in spring. Even though the foliage quickly burns with the first freeze, the plant quickly recovers in the spring with the onset of frost free weather. USDA zones 5-11 in cold hardiness. Native to Japan.
